David Bennett is drawn to things that don’t last. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, the digital artist, motion designer and creative director works with hypersaturated visuals that oscillate between abstract and figurative, turning digitized glimpses of daily life and random ephemera into something hypnotic and rhythmically alive. Pattern, colour and rhythm are his primary tools, alongside generative, automatic and procedural techniques. What makes his practice particularly interesting is what happens next: finished works are deconstructed and recycled as digital seeds for new iterations, each piece feeding into the next in an endless cycle of transformation. Music drives much of it, guiding the rhythmic and sequencing decisions that give the work its pulse.
Another Kick Test: this video synthesis sequence is part of an ongoing study of motion vocabulary, exploring how sound can shape movement, rhythm and visual form. The soundtrack combines rhythmic percussion with chopped and abstracted vocal fragments sourced from radio broadcasts and medical lectures. Audio transients are tracked and translated into MIDI control signals, allowing the sound to directly influence the behaviour of the image. Built primarily in the Raw Yaw Media Rhodopsin iOS app, the visual system runs through a cascading chain of video feedback. Simple bullet-point glyphs generate the circular forms, which are layered with shifting colour gradients and transformed through feedback into cyan and purple, circuitry-like structures. As the kick drum hits, these forms pulse, expand and reorganise, turning the soundtrack into a physical force within the image. Originally developed as a lo-fi system calibration and hardware connectivity test, the sequence became an exploration in its own right, a small audiovisual machine where rhythm, colour, feedback and signal continually affect one another.
