Shusaku Kaji works with electricity the way painters work with pigment. Based in Osaka, he creates abstract audiovisual works using electrical signals, modular systems and a hybrid analog-digital process, finding in the raw behaviour of circuits and oscillators a primitive, fundamental beauty that no software can quite replicate. His work has been shown at the European Media Art Festival, Ars Electronica, the London International Animation Festival, MONSTRA Lisbon, Nuit Blanche Paris and the Centre Pompidou. He has shown at Punto y Raya four times across three countries. And this is not his first appearance at Kinomural either: his work has been featured at the festival several times before. Alongside his artistic practice he founded and runs JIKAN Design Inc., a motion graphics studio based in Osaka through which he curates projects and events.
At Kinomural he’s showing Modulated Dimensions, three minutes of pure audio-reactive electricity built from CGI and feedback. Fragments of signal drift through space and open a door to somewhere else, a place where chaos and beauty show up at the same time, tangled across dimensions. Metallic tones swing back and forth like waves, then the percussion and noise kick loose and everything comes apart in the best possible way.
