Michał Socha

Michał Socha lets pictures misbehave. First came The Simpsons – Michał created one of the iconic Couch Gags. Then Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet, for which he created the animated segment “On Freedom.” Along the way, his independent films have travelled the festival circuit, from Annecy and Ottawa to Kraków and BuSho, picking up awards and accolades along the way. But big productions are only part of the story. Michał is a director, animator and visual artist who has spent years developing his own visual language, somewhere between surreal humour, bold graphic design and stories where you never quite know what’s going to happen next. His characters have minds of their own, reality often slips out of control, and an ordinary picture can suddenly do something completely unexpected. Michał also directs commercials and commissioned projects. His studio is based in Warsaw, but his films regularly set off into the world.

Exercise. Eat. Exercise. Eat. Exercise. Eat. Count calories. Check. Adjust. Start again. LOOP is an experimental animation about the endless pursuit of perfection. Human figures fall into a rhythm of repetitive routines that is difficult to escape — another workout, another meal, another number on the display, another attempt to become the “right” version of yourself. The film is based on Michał Socha’s original artwork, which comes alive in animation as parts of a single, endlessly looping machine.
