Some filmmakers tell stories. Kim Jaehyeon goes somewhere deeper. Born in Gangneung in 1994, she studied German Literature before finding her way to animation at the Korea National University of Arts, and that unlikely detour seems to have shaped everything: her films don’t follow plots, they follow feelings. The unconscious kind, the ones that don’t have names yet.
Working with abstract images and non-linear narratives, she builds animations from the inside out, distilling personal experience down to shape, colour and rhythm until what remains is something more honest than any story could be. She’s still early in her career, but her work has already reached international festivals, and what she’s making right now feels like the beginning of something worth paying close attention to.
