Give Juan R. Lage a shape and he’ll deform it, stretch it, and turn it into something else entirely. The Argentine animation director, illustrator and audiovisual artist moves fluidly between drawing, animation, live visuals and experimental moving image, always leaning on playful forms, emotional textures and a distinctly handmade feel. Alongside his personal practice he has collaborated with international brands, musicians and cultural institutions, among them Spotify, Kenzo, GIPHY, Bizarrap, Blinkink and the Bayerische Staatsoper, exploring rhythm, gesture and poetic visual storytelling across everything he touches.
At Kinomural he’s showing Dibujos Livianos, a compilation of short animations made across different periods, all circling the ideas of deformation and transformation. Through editing, recurring gestures, rhythms and visual ideas were intuitively picked out and threaded together, producing a soft, dreamlike space where images emerge, dissolve and return like fleeting thoughts or half-remembered memories. Moving between tenderness, strangeness and play, it can be shown with its original sound or as silent animated visuals.
